Blumat Jr. – Automatic Irrigation Stake

The Blumat Jr., also known as the Blumat Classic, is a simple automatic watering stake designed for houseplants and other indoor container plants. First introduced in 1965, it provides a reliable way to maintain more consistent moisture without pumps, timers, batteries, or electricity.

Each Blumat Jr. uses a porous ceramic cone connected to a thin water tube. The tube draws water from a separate container that acts as the reservoir. You can use a decorative vase, glass, jar, or larger container depending on how much water your plant needs and how long you plan to leave it unattended.

As the growing medium begins to dry, the Blumat Jr. automatically draws additional water from the reservoir. This helps reduce the guesswork associated with overwatering and underwatering while giving each plant a steady supply of water based on changing moisture conditions. When the reservoir gets low, simply refill it and leave the Blumat Jr. in place.

Instructions for Use

Step 1

Fill a bowl with water and remove the green cap from the Blumat Jr. Place both the cap and ceramic cone completely underwater and allow them to soak for at least 15 minutes.

Step 2

While keeping the ceramic cone and green cap submerged, gently shake or tap the pieces to release trapped air bubbles. Press the green cap firmly back onto the cone while everything is still underwater.

Tip: Place the end of the tubing into your intended water reservoir before reinstalling the cap. This can help remove excess air from the tube and allow the watering system to begin operating more quickly.

Step 3

Insert the ceramic cone fully into the plant’s growing medium, leaving the green cap exposed above the surface.

Step 4

Place the open end of the connected tube near the bottom of a full container of water.

Step 5

Position the reservoir so the water level is approximately even with, or slightly below, the green cap. Raising the reservoir will increase water delivery, while lowering it will reduce the flow rate.

Tips on Using Your Blumat Jr.

Maintenance Remove the green cap and soak both components in warm water for about 5 minutes at least once per year. While the parts are submerged, press the cap on and off several times to help flush out accumulated residue. The inside and outside of the ceramic cone can also be gently brushed to remove debris.

Refilling Your Container Once the Blumat Jr. is installed, there is no need to remove it when the reservoir gets low. Simply add more water directly to the container and keep the tube in place.

Empty Water Container If the reservoir runs completely dry, repeat the original soaking and setup process before using the system again. Re-priming the Blumat Jr. helps ensure the ceramic cone and tubing are properly filled with water and free of excess air.

Extra Large Plants Larger plants or containers with greater water demands may benefit from using two Blumat Jr. stakes. You can also raise the water reservoir several inches above the green cap to increase the amount of water delivered.

Nutrients If your plant requires fertilizer or nutrients, a compatible nutrient solution can be added to the water reservoir. The Blumat Jr. will then deliver the solution along with the irrigation water. Follow the fertilizer manufacturer’s recommended application rates.

Additional Saturation Periodically watering the plant directly with a watering can can help thoroughly re-saturate the growing medium. A deep watering approximately every 4–6 weeks may be useful depending on the plant, pot size, and growing conditions.
